Monday Motivation: 5.20.13

Happy Monday!  This week is just going to fly by.  I have something every night this week and Thursday afternoon, I'm heading to Maryland/Delaware for my friend Kait's wedding! I'm so excited - it's been 2 1/2 years since all our friends were in the same place and I simply can't wait for the shenanigans that are going to ensue this weekend.  Plus, the wedding is at the beach, and I love seeing the ocean whenever I can! #midwestgirl #lakelover

Tomorrow night, I would love to invite you to a special Center for Girls' Leadership event, a Percentage Night at MyBurger in Uptown.  If you are in the area, come join us from 4-10pm when 25% of the proceeds will go toward the CGL.  Burgers and fries, empowering girls to lead, and quality time with me?  What's not to love!

See you tomorrow night! And make it your week to shine!

Alex

History.

There are days in my life when I wake up and think it's just an ordinary day.  But then something happens and life changes in a split second. Take that September day when I was in high school.  Nothing was the same after that.  Or the day K and I decided to be more than friends. Or even the day I decided to act on my idea of starting a leadership-focused nonprofit for girls.  These simple days become history, even if it is just a part of your personal history books.

Today is not that kind of day.  Today is not ordinary at all.  Today has been years in the making.  It's no secret that I believe in equality, that all people should have the right to love whoever they want and if they so choose, they should be able to express that love through marriage. Love is love, y'all.

In November, the people of Minnesota voted. Last week, the Minnesota House of Representatives voted.  Yesterday, the Minnesota Senate voted. And today, all that's left is for Governor Dayton to sign. Years in the making and today is the day.  Minnesota will become the 12th state to allow same-sex marriage. Thank God we're not 50.  But the truth is, we'd never be #50.

I tear up thinking that it is now a reality that my future children will not know a time when the freedom to marry the one they love was not an option in Minnesota. I am overjoyed to think that as I can teach those future children about the beautiful blue waters, the rolling farmland, and the green forests that make up this state, I can teach them about the people that built this state.  The explorers, the pioneers, the lumberjacks and farmers and now everyone decided to be one of the first to the marriage equality party.  Ordinary people who woke up one day and decided to be extraordinary.

It's also no secret that I love this great state. Minnesota will always be my home and today, I've never been prouder. This one came for the people, by the people

Today, history is made.

Alex

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day! Hard to believe that it's been one year exactly since we graduated law school and our mom's were both here to cheer us on.

I have so many things I want to say about my mom today but the words turn to tears too quickly.  I am so eternally grateful to have this woman as my beacon, my rock, my shining star, my heroine, my inspiration. Not a day goes by that I don't thank God for choosing me to be her daughter and her to be my mama.

What do you have planned for the weekend?  K and I are seeing Iron Man 3 tonight and going to see the Twinkies play tomorrow!  Have a fabulous weekend!

Zumba Zumba Zumba.

It's no secret I love Zumba.  I credit Gina at The Finessista for inspiring me to give the class a try.  I've been going regularly for over a year now and it is by far my favorite way to work out! I even kicked around getting certified to teach Zumba this winter. Maybe someday! However, I've missed my favorite class for a couple weeks now because of work.  But I love my job, especially after we had a Zumba instructor come in on Monday and teach us a class!

Anyway, when I can't make it to class, I will sometimes dance at my house using the Zumba songs from class or a compilation of YouTube videos to get my jam on.

I can never share enough about Zumba so I thought I'd try to put a quick little "class" together for you! Enjoy!

A Target Spring

Winter has lasted forever here in Minnesota (seriously, snow in May in just ridiculous) and last week when we got a couple days of sunshine, I decided to spring for a little Target shopping spree. Here's what I found, all for under $45 (I love me some Target sales/clearance)!

I love my funky little purse. It's totally outside the box of my "normal" style but I'm trying to embrace color these days.  As for the t-shirt, I live in these.boyfriend shirts. Day to day, gym, bed, work...I love all the shirts. As for the nail polish, this turquoise/teal color is probably my favorite color ever.  It's my grandma's favorite too which I think is kind of special.  And these shoes...I'm trying to embrace heels which is new for me but I'm loving the height!

Anyway, have you had any good finds from Target lately?

Alex

Target obviously didn't compensate me for this but I wouldn't hate it if they did!
