Need a Little Christmas Now!!

We Need A Little Christmas by Johnny Mathis

For we need a little music, need a little laughter,
need a little singing ringing through the rafter
and we need a little snappy, happy ever after
We need a little Christmas now!

kind of craving this guy's life right now.  how sick would it be to roadtrip across the country, checking out music festivals, and handing out free ice cream?  yes, please!

check out the ice cream man's latest video, featuring my "friend," Amos Lee.  (and yes, i say friend, since i did meet Amos Lee this spring, and played wiffleball with him and his band.  it was awesome!)

football season.

football season is almost here.  and i'm soooo excited!  but let me be clear.  there is only one kind of football - SEC Football.  i could care less about brett favre and his "will he or won't he" games. (today, apparently, he will.  the strib is reporting he's finally in town.)  big 10?  yeah right.  and get over yourself, notre dame.  i will forever be a SEC fan.

more importantly, i will always be a gamecock fan.  i wasn't born and bred, but i'm definitely a convert.  my years in south carolina were amazing!  i learned from the best how to tailgate, drink, and cheer for the perpetual underdog.  i also learned "cock" is not a dirty word, but something to be proud of being!

via williamsbrice.com

watching our baseball team win the national championship this year was an unbelievable experience.  but everyone in the gamecock nation still hopes our football team will prove itself in the big games.

so here's to another year.  another season to kill the tigers, dawgs, and gators.  and a health carolina to all the big ole cocks out there!

so, mark your calendar!

go. fight. win. kick ass.  go cocks!!

music over law.

Another fabulous week full of clutch songs!  I'm thinking this blog should have been called life.music.luck since there's so much more music magic than law.

On Monday, I saw Something Corporate at the Cabooze.  It was a last minute concert but a girl just can't say no to live outdoor music!

On Tuesday, I met some friends at Solera for a meeting and we stayed for the evening rooftop movie: GREASE SING-A-LONG!!!  Grease is one of my favorite movies ever.  Hands down classic.  And a Minneapolis rooftop on a summer night with all of your new best friends singing with Danny, Sandy, Rizzo and the rest of the Pink Ladies and T-Birds - well, it's just about perfect.

Wednesday I heard one of my favorite Mellencamp songs on the way home...John Mellencamp was one of my favorite concerts ever.  I was the youngest person there but it was amazing.  Everyone sang every word to every song...the entire night!

On Thursday, I bought my Sara Bareilles tix for November and am so stoked!

I guess music magic is what gets me through the week.  I like work, but I'm ready for school to start and to get my schedule set.  I'm such a planner but I feel so up in the air right now.  I'm still waitlisted for a class and the firm's management meeting isn't for a couple weeks so I don't know if I'm going to be working there in the fall yet.  I really hope I am asked to stay on, but who knows what's going to happen.

But, I'm trying harder not to be such a planner/worrier.  Live in the moment.

Just love the journey.

magical music monday.

i love music.  i love good music.  i love bad music.  i love when it makes me laugh and i love when it makes me cry.  and today was one of those magical music days.

so it started out with john mayer.  i've never been a big john "look at my O face" mayer fan, but today his song Say came on during my drive to work and it just hit home.

so then, as i was nearly in tears, i switched radio stations and immediately broke out into the biggest grin.  why?  phil freakin' collins and genesis.

are you jamming with me yet?!  and with that i'm ready to tackle monday at the office!  i flip on pandora - which i've recently discovered is not blocked by the firm's firewall.  my station of choice lately has been edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros.

now, like i said, i love music.  and there is nothing more frustrating than a song being stuck in your head and not knowing what it is.  well, my friends, last summer i heard this funky song and i was obsessed with it.  except for the fact i knew one line and for the life of me, couldn't find the song with google.  fail.  so for a year now, the song would drift in and out of my head at the most random times.

so, i'm plugging away at work when all of a sudden a song catches my attention.  could it be?  is it she?  yes, yes, yes....the song that has been haunting me for a year was playing!!!  and i'm sure everyone knows this song, and could have told me what it was in two seconds.  but i feel so victorious today, and no one can take that away from me!

so here it is:  Walking on a Dream by Empire of the Sun (link to actual video)

this song will forever remind me of tonka on the perfect summer night - dancing with friends as the boat flies across the water.  bliss.

happy monday!!

love.

yes, i'm watching the bachelorette.  ugh.  but great words of wisdom from one of the guys' family motto:

love is the only reality.

ingrid.

I saw Ingrid Michaelson this weekend at Basilica Block Party - one of the coolest outdoor concerts of the year.  The show bills itself as the party of a higher order.  You literally party right on the church grounds.

The weather was amazing and the people were fabulous.  But Ingrid rocked my world.  Every song is better than the last.  I had goosebumps for about three minutes straight when she announced that two people both emailed her to say they wanted to propose to each other at her concert.  Normally, I despise public proposals.  But since this couple was completely in sync with each other and you knew the answer it was perfect.  And then Ingrid launched into The Way I Am.

And I can't get this song out of my head.  L.O.V.E. it.

YOU AND I

Written by Ingrid Michaelson

Don't you worry there my honey
We might not have any money
But we've got our love to pay the bills

Maybe I think you're cute and funny
Maybe I wanna do what bunnies do with you if you know what I mean

Oh lets get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France
Lets get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance
Lets get rich and build a house on a mountain making everybody look like ants
From way up there, you and I, you and I

Well you might be a bit confused
And you might be a little bit bruised
But baby how we spoon like no one else
So I will help you read those books
If you will soothe my worried looks
And we will put the lonesome on the shelf

Lets get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France
Lets get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance
Lets get rich and build a house on a mountain making everybody look like ants
From way up there, you and I, you and I

Lets get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France
Lets get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance
Lets get rich and build a house on a mountain making everybody look like ants
From way up there, you and I, you and I

Thank you, Ingrid!

my life is now complete.  newsies. gaga. christian bale.

update: move 100 miles

Maybe I'm just not cut out to move.  One month into my personal challenge to move 100 miles and I'm going nowhere.  Literally and figuratively.  But seriously, at the rate I'm going, if I hit 2 miles a day, I only have 45 more days until I cross the finish line!

My main problem is continuity.  I find it difficult to come home from work and find the enthusiasm to work out.  And don't even think about working out in the morning - I'm a snooze-forEVA-kind-of-girl.  And to be fair, it has been raining non-stop in Minneapolis the past couple weeks.

So, instead of moving measurable miles (alliteration, sigh.), I bought a new yoga mat and have been enjoying a little Denise Austin and a strange desert lady in a white unitard with major cameltoe:

I'm not moving as far as I thought, but I'm staying active and I feel healthy and I really need to see Marta the tailor so I can't really complain.  I'm on track, just taking the scenic route to 100.

oh yeah!

heard this on the current today:

...makes me wanna party!!

This week is busy as hell at work.  Last weekend I had nothing to do so it was suggested I go looking for work.  By emailing every single attorney in the place...needless to say, I'm slammed.  So, I look up, it's lunchtime; I look up, it was time to go home 30 minutes ago.  Better busy than bored!

Big weekend ahead!  I'm heading up north to the cabin with some friends and how lucky are we - The Ramona Fritz Band is playing on Saturday!!  I'm packing my dancing shoes!!

so pretty.

i l.o.v.e. everything about
this wedding from One Love Photo:

writing.

if it doesn’t come bursting out of you
in spite of everything,
don’t do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
and your gut,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your typewriter
searching for words,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it for money or fame,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it because you want
women in your bed,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit there and
rewrite it again and again,
don’t do it.
if it’s hard work just thinking about doing it,
don’t do it.
if you’re trying to write like somebody else,
forget about it.
if you have to wait for it to roar out of you,
then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
do something else.
if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
you’re not ready.
don’t be like so many writers,
don’t be like so many thousands of
people who call themselves writers,
don’t be dull and boring and
pretentious, don’t be consumed with self-love.
the libraries of the world have
yawned themselves to sleep over your kind.
don’t add to that.
don’t do it.
unless it comes out of
your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would
drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don’t do it.
unless the sun inside you is
burning your gut,
don’t do it.
when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.
there is no other way.
and there never was.

rough week for this LOST fan (even though I think the finale was perfect and beautiful!):

It's Been One Week...

Work is kicking my butt.  The learning curve is so high it will be August before I understand what is going on!  But the people are fantastic and I'm going to get such great experience.  This is such an incredible opportunity!

What I've picked up over the last week:
  • Give 110%.  Hell, in this job market, give 210%.
  • Build relationships.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions.
  • Double-check your work.
  • Manage expectations.
  • I am way more productive without gchat and facebook.  Weird.
  • If you want direction, ask for it.
  • If you are searching for something and are getting frustrated because you can't find it, relax.  It just might not be there.
  • Working until 6:30 PM is normal.
  • Love what you do.  Whatever it is.
In other news, Barenaked Ladies signed on for Basilica Block Party!!!!  HELLS YES!!!

And last but not least, this song has been stuck on repeat in my head all week:

not nerdy at all.  straight up inspirational.  via couch to 5k:

Move 100 Miles

I hate to exercise.  I get bored easily, I look like an idiot, and I have better things to do.  Like catch up on my Hulu queue.  But the terrible thing is, once I get my butt in gear, I feel great!  I love being outside in the sunshine and breathing that fresh Minnesota air.

So, to motivate me this summer, I'm putting my goal in writing - Move 100 Miles.  I don't care if I walk, run, crawl, skip, hop, or frolic through a meadow.  I just want to move.  100 miles.  I'm already up to mile 3!

I tried this last year on the road and I made it to 20something, but then I lost track of my total and said to hell with it.  So, Round 2!

And in honor of my love affair with lists, a few ways to Move 100 Miles:
  • walk every block in the neighborhood
  • kayak to Ten Mile (it's like 6 miles!)
  • try rollerblading
  • stroll around the lakes of minneapolis
  • give running a try - Couch to 5K sounds perfect
Hopefully this time I'll be able to kick it in gear and Move 100 Miles!!!

On the Clock

Exhausted.  Little sleep this weekend and my first full day of work in over a year and I am tuckered out.  I'm excited and overwhelmed by my first day in a law firm.  I met so many people with names and faces that don't quite match yet.  I had hours of training on the firm's software programs.  I have new passwords and codes and rules and shortcuts and numbers to memorize. I have a map of the place to get familiar with.  And most importantly, I have my first assignment.

It's a simple negligence / assault & battery case to research, but it feels important.  Important in the way that I'm getting paid to do research as opposed to the mindless cases we read in school.

Anyway, off to bed.  This week is going to kick my ass.

Roots and Wings

It's been a year since I officially unpacked my suitcase and made Minnesota my home again.  I spent four years traveling back and forth across the Mason-Dixon Line for undergrad, a month frolicking in Europe, and a year traveling the country as a consultant for my sorority.  While I never neglected my roots, I had been quite focused on my wings.  But over the last year, I flew only once.

I love to travel, and if I had the money I'd be on a plane tomorrow.  But as a broke law student, I have no money.  My traveling is confined to dreaming and my suitcase stays in the closet.

If money grew on trees, tomorrow I'd be headed to:
  • Croatia
  • Istanbul
  • Dominican Republic
  • South Africa
  • Montreal
  • Charleston, South Carolina
I may be done flying around, but I do not regret coming home to Minnesota.  I absolutely love this state.  I love the people, the weather, the lakes, the seasons.  I love how you have at least one person in common with everyone you meet.  I love how the Twin Cities are big cities with a small town feel.  I love how Minnesota is the self-proclaimed State of Hockey.  I love that people from other places never seem to know where Minnesota is on a map.  Which is perfect because it makes my state the best kept secret.  I could never imagine settling somewhere else, let alone potentially raising a family somewhere else.

So, one year back and my roots keep growing deeper in Minnesota.  And I wouldn't wish it any other way...as long as I can dream an amazing vacation up every now and then!

My one week of summer vacation is over.  Thank goodness the sun decided to shine this weekend!  I start my new job tomorrow and I am beginning to freak out!  I will be clerking at a law firm here in town.  I'm not exactly sure what I've learned this year or if I will be able to put any of that uncertainty into play, but I guess I'll know more tomorrow!

Wish me luck!
